Ubuntu 5.10

The puzzling.org server is now running the new release of Ubuntu: 5.10 (”Breezy Badger”). For users’ purposes this boils down to having software that is six or so months newer.

Outage July 2 - July 5

There was an extensive puzzling.org outage from July 2 to July 5. This doesn’t seem to have been related to the Linode hosting problems at all: somehow the puzzling.org server shut down and stayed down. All it needed was manual booting. Unfortunately I wasn’t around (I was diving) from July 2 to July 4 so it remained down for three days until Joanna SMSed me about it. Next time I’m on holidays I’ll try to remember to warn people. I don’t think it’s going to be possible to get to the bottom of the “why was it shut down?” mystery though.

Another outage

This one was for reasons fairly similar to the last one, and lasted for an hour, from 6pm to 7pm June 28, Sydney time. Details on the Linode forum: Another TP breaker trip.

Several hour long outage

There was a puzzling.org outage from about 6:30pm on June 26 to 1:30am on June 27 (Sydney time). This seems to have been due to the following Linode issues:

Mailman

I’ve switched back to using Mailman for the puzzling.org mailing lists, rather than Ecartis. The latter had a lot of problems with mails being held for moderation and then not being approvable.

New puzzling site

logoscopy.org has been added to the puzzling stable. Well, will be added I’m sure, when Sam is ready.

WordPress 1.5

I’m upgrading (slowly, painfully) everyone’s installation of WordPress to version 1.5. This will change the layout of some people’s sites, if they had the old green+brown WordPress default look.

I’m not sure whether this will have any further effect on the comment/trackback spam issue, but running the latest version of any given software is usually a good starting point for system security.

Comment spam

puzzling.org WordPress installations got a huge whack of comment spam over the last few months, much of which slipped by me unnoticed, sadly. I’m going through and deleting as much of it as I can find, and I’m disabling tracebacks on WordPress setups (I know, about six months after every sensible WordPress admin did).

Hoary Hedgehog

I’ve just upgraded the system to Ubuntu 5.04: Hoary Hedgehog, which became stable earlier today. I uninstalled a bunch of seemingly useless junk, please let me know if I broke anything.

There was a long puzzling.org outage on Thursday 31st March/Friday 1st April due to Linode being down. The site came back up early Friday morning. Further details are on the linode forums.

Ooh! Ooh! Ubuntu!

I am monstrously sneaky… I discovered that Linode supports Ubuntu 4.10 and I just had to “upgrade”. It’s very weird doing it live, that’s for sure.

Undoubtedly I’ve forgotten something… but now I can use this image:

Shutting down old server

We’ll be shutting down the Redwood Virtual server soon, please let me know ASAP if there is something wrong with the new server, particularly missing data.

And we’re done

The last of the sites, users.puzzling.org in fact (difficult because I had to set up the mail on the new server), has been moved to the linode server.

Noone but Andrew and myself can even login to the old server now.

Final moves

Ok, eyes is over (with a closing down message), somewhat is over. i.am and everything.is.strange.and is over.

This leaves daize, abstraktn and users, so a few more database dumps and WordPress migrations to go.

mafioso and perpetuity

I’m going to close down eyes over the next few days, and then the big push to get the last of you lot moved.

Next up: perpetuity, eyes and mafioso, probably in that order. After that we’re left with: abstraktn; daize; everything.is.strange.and; i.am; somewhat and users, all of which will require my having mail infrastructure all ready to go…

Update on sites moved:

  • puzzling.org
  • andrew.puzzling.org
  • bennetts.puzzling.org
  • buglinks.org
  • gardiner.id.au
  • gspot.puzzling.org
  • imaginary.puzzling.org
  • live.linuxchix.org
  • planet.twistedmatrix.com
  • mary.gardiner.id.au
  • poetry.puzzling.org
  • procrastinating.org

Unfortunately I forgot to reset the DNS timeout on buglinks, so I’ve got 24 hours left before I can check if it works.

All other sites are still on the old host. Next up (tomorrow, or more likely Tuesday):

  • allovertheworld.puzzling.org
  • frideswide.puzzling.org
  • sue.gardiner.id.au

The sites of users who also have logins and regularly use them will be done last, and quickly. These are:

  • i.am.puzzling.org
  • daize.puzzling.org
  • somewhat.puzzling.org
  • everything.is.strange.and.puzzling.org

I’ll probably prepare the daize template in advance. The other thing I need to do at that time is zap everyone’s mail over, and have squirrelmail ready to go.
